Worlds & Where to Play Next
The Journey's worlds are a ladder. You begin in The Resonant Plains โ a short, free tutorial โ then step onto the ladder proper at Cinderfall; from there each world you finish opens the next, and each one is a step up in enemy power and in the loot you pull.
Each world sits deeper in the Dissonance than the last โ the song bent further from true. That's why a new world asks you to ascend rather than just re-gear: ascending is attunement, not a stat purchase. See Deepening Dissonance for the story the ladder is telling and why gear alone can't carry you outward.
Before the ladder โ The Resonant Plainsโ
Your very first battles happen in The Resonant Plains โ a short, free tutorial world that sits before Cinderfall on the map. It's where you meet Signa, the companion who walks you in, and Echo, the resonance-spirit who lends your fighters strength while you find your feet.
The Plains is built to be cleared, not survived. One chapter of eight quick teaching nodes introduces one idea at a time โ the action bar, the three roles, classes, elements, over-time effects, a swarm, an elite, and a first boss. It costs no energy, it's tuned so your fresh starter trio wins comfortably, and it's the safe place to learn the ropes before the real climb.
You graduate out of the Plains once you've grown a little (around Battle Level 10). From there the map opens onto Cinderfall and the world ladder below. See Step 5 โ Your First Battle for the full walkthrough.
The ladderโ
| World | Element / gear band | How it opens |
|---|---|---|
| The Resonant Plains (Tutorial) | Plains ยท teaching | The free starting world โ where every new player begins. |
| Cinderfall (Season 1) | Volcanic ยท Ashen | The first full world โ you step onto it after the Plains tutorial. |
| The Stillair (Season 2) | Storm ยท Stormswept | Clear Cinderfall's Herald (its capstone boss). |
| Meridian Deep (Season 3) | Tidal ยท Barnacled | Clear The Stillair's Herald. |
| Hollowroot (Season 4) | Verdant ยท Overgrown | Clear Meridian Deep's Herald. Open now (since 2026-08-16). |
| Sonentius (Event) | SkyScape | A limited-time event world โ open to everyone right now. |
Worlds unlock in order. Each sealed world opens when you clear the Herald โ the capstone boss โ of the world before it. Everyone starts in Cinderfall; beat its Herald and The Stillair opens, then Meridian Deep behind Stillair's. Later seasons stay sealed the same way.
Each world is a re-gear, not a coastโ
A new world isn't just "the same fight, bigger numbers." Enemies scale up, and your last world's kit won't carry you far. Each world brings three things at once:
-
A new gear band โ Ashen โ Stormswept โ Barnacled โ forged from that world's own materials (see World Loot). Higher band = a real power jump.
-
A new Ascension stage โ worlds and ascension stages line up one-to-one, so entering a world is your cue to ascend into its bracket. That one-to-one isn't a coincidence โ one world deeper into the Dissonance is one octave deeper for your fighters' resonance:
World Ascension it opens Cinderfall Stage 3 (Ascend into the Ashen bracket) The Stillair Stage 4 (Stormswept) Meridian Deep Stage 5 (Barnacled) Hollowroot Stage 6 โ today's top stage (Overgrown) -
A tougher fight โ bring the right team types and expect to grind the world's materials before you're comfortable.
You're ready when you can clear the current world's Herald โ that's the gate, and it's a genuine check. If the Herald walls you, don't force the next world; re-gear in the current band, grow Essence, and ascend first. The worlds are tuned so a fresh world's opening sits about where the previous world's toughest fights end.
Event worlds are side contentโ
Sonentius (in the Event slot) runs alongside the main ladder โ it's open to everyone regardless of how far up the ladder you are, and it drops its own materials and gear. Treat event worlds as a parallel source of loot and fun, not a rung you have to climb. See SkyScape for the current event.
Once you've maxed the ladderโ
Cleared Hollowroot and geared up in Overgrown? The climb continues within a world through the Dissonance dial โ a difficulty slider that keeps paying richer loot as you push it. That's the endgame ladder once you've run out of new worlds to open.
